Having just finished Deus Ex Mankind Divided I was somewhat disappointed by its cliffhanger ending and its rather cryptic yet predictable mid credit “twist”. That was until I did some digging around on reddit and found an interesting conspiracy theory that has gained more credence since the game came out.
In one of the games missions you have the opportunity to access the secret vault ofVersalife a mega corporation attached to the Illuminati and personal store hold for Bob Page (the villain of Deus Ex 1).
Inside there are several containers and inside one of those said containers you can find this.
Another Adam Jensen containing a head and a torso.
What’s going on here?
Surely occam’s razor would suggest this is merely a placeholder for the development team that needed a body and figured players wouldn’t notice a recycled Adam right?
That would make sense if this didn’t exist.
Also on an added note is an accompanying ebook. Talking about the subject’s lack for a need of Neuropozyne which is something unique to Adam only.
This is where the clone conspiracy theory comes to answer.
Recall that at the end of Deus Ex Human Revolution Adam was thrown into the ocean after the collapse of Panchea and according to Mankind Divided he was not recovered for at least 7 days.
So let’s answer some simple questions.
What : The Adam Jensen you’re playing could very well be an accelerated clone of the original dead Jensen after the end of Human Revolution.
Why: The Illuminati clearly express interest at the end of Mankind Divided about Jensen’s imminent contact with Janus (the leader of the anti-Illuminati group). If the clone theory were to be true, this would make your Adam in Mankind Divided an unknowing pawn of the Illuminati with implanted memories whose sole purpose is to unintentionally find the Illuminati’s enemies in the dark.
Note the appearance of the Psychologist of the task force as being part of the Illuminati and her keeping track of Jensen. How their first conversation with Jensen is about how much he can remember the events of the past.
How: This is where things get complicated and yet more compelling for the theory.
In one of the game’s more interesting side quests The Last Harvest
In the proper ending we learn that experiments were being run by Tai Yong medical regarding a chip that can be used on augs to access the memories of others.
It’s not too far of a draw to think that such technology could be used to implant memories in a blank slate through recovered augs.
In another side quest Jensen tries to work with David Sarif to figure out what happened to him during a certain blank memory for him.
The culmination of this quest line ends with Sarif informing Adam that he has certain serial numbers on his augs that would make him easy to identify. This implies that when he was in the facility those in charge either didn’t want him identified or already knew who he was. This adds more evidence to the idea that a purposeful recovery attempt for the original dead Adam Jensen was made and then augs were transferred to a cloned body.
On a more thematic level there is an additional side quest where you track down Helle and discover she an offshoot original Eliza from Panchea. There’s a heavy discussion between them about the nature of reconstructing memories and how to live going forward. Not direct evidence but the theme goes hand in hand.
With all of this evidence and the nature of the ending. It makes a compelling conspiracy theory that Mankind Divided’s Adam Jensen is indeed a clone of Human Revolution’s dead Adam Jensen.
With a game series all about conspiracies being real, one can wonder if this is what the intended twist of any future entries will be.
